Woodstock is an unincorporated community that technically spans three counties, including Howard, Baltimore and Carroll. The majority of the town is located in Howard County and it generally has the feel and makeup of some of nearby areas like Ellicott City and Columbia, though housing tends to be more expensive. In 2008, for instance, the median home price in the area was over $550,000 and most homes are either part of planned communities that feature large homes and immaculately-manicured lawns or older stately homes that retain a lot of old world charm. There are also a few developments that feature town houses and condominiums, though these are relatively rare for the Woodstock area. It is also worth noting that the nearby town of Granite, which is in Baltimore County, is closely related to Woodstock though technically not part of the town. Because there is no post office serving Granite, the smaller town shares a zip code (21163) with Woodstock and is often referred to as Woodstock in mailings and news stories about the area. Granite is made up of generally older, historic homes, with many of the homes on the National Register of Historic Places. The town's name changed to Granite well after its founding to commemorate the town's granite mining history. Many of the homes in Granite were built in the late 1890s and many still exist, exhibiting the "farm house" style of architecture that is both simple and elegant. Homes for sale in Woodstock and Granite generally fall into the upper price range of most would-be buyers, though there are still some homes for sale in more affordable price ranges and the public schools in the Woodstock area are particularly well-liked by parents of school-aged children.
